Richard Czyhold,
a life long
farmer and native of the Walla Walla Valley began creating his artwork 4
years ago, when neighboring Bunchgrass Winery commissioned him to make a
sculpture for their tasting room. Using skills learned while pursuing a
welding degree in college and years of experience fabricating parts on the
farm, Richard looked to metal of all kinds for his media. Taking his
inspiration from natural plant forms and his love of the outdoors, his
subject matter is native grasses, wheat and cat tails. The sculptures range
in size of 12" to 15 feet tall steel bouquets sometimes taking the form of
bird baths, fountains, pond art, trellis', garden benches and gates. Indoor
works that are highly polished and colored with the heat from the torch to
create a rainbow effect on the steel are also available.
Recently, he has begun to create whimsical garden art from farm machinery parts, having farmed his whole life there has been a wealth of old parts on our farm (now referred to as art supplies instead of junk) Many clients are enjoying his work in their gardens. In January he created a 12' high and 24' long dragon that stands out in front of his studio that has become quite that conversation piece. Richard's work has been shown in numerous wineries in Walla Walla, the Pendleton Art Center, The Art Stop in Tacoma, WA, Wallowa Arts Festival, Carnegie Art Center in Walla Walla and is available at Brickstone Interiors and his studio.
